Many of the Farmers Markets will start opening soon. If you have never shopped at a Farmers Market give it a try! You will be pleasantly surprised at the fresh produce and friendly atmosphere. Here are a few tips:- Browse before you buy- When you first arrive walk through the market and check the quality and price of the items you would like to buy. Once you have compared quality and price go back and purchase the produce that is the best value.
- Bring cash- Most of the farmers do not take credit cards.
- Bring a helper- I love to take my teenagers to help me carry the 1/2 bushel boxes of fruit or bags of corn. While they run the box back to the car, I can shop for the next deal.
- Only buy as much as you will use- Many of the fruits and veggies are sold in 1/2 bushel boxes or 25 lb. bags, etc. Remember,if you are going to buy in quantity you need to have a place to store the apples, peaches, etc. or you will need to have the time to freeze or bottle the produce you are buying within the next week or two to prevent spoiling.
