Family Home Evening Idea

Family Home Evening is a great time to work on "Faith in God", "Duty to God" or "Personal Progress". There are several ways to do this. Try any of the following that might work for your family:

  • Have each child read over and decide on the specific goals they want to work on, while parents move from child to child to counsel, give suggestions and sign off goals the children have already completed.
  • Have each child complete one of the goals he/she is working on for any of the above programs during FHE such as: lead the singing, give a specific lesson, share a story or testimony. After  he/she completes the value experience, etc. make sure to sign them off.
  • After the FHE lesson, take time during refreshments for each parent to work one on one with a child to just review where they are at and sign off the things they have completed.
  • Establish a week of the month such as the 1st Monday, etc. that is "Faith in God", "Duty to God", and "Personal Progress" FHE. Always do something for FHE from these programs.
  • If one of the goals the child/children is working on is something they need instruction on from a parent, prepare a FHE lesson on laundry, cooking, leading music, money management, etc. Make sure to include all the requirements needed for "Duty to God", etc. in the lesson material. These can be fun hands on lessons that give a change of pace from regular FHE lessons.
  • Don't get discouraged! If it has been awhile and you have forgotten to work on these great programs just get back to it! Have fun teaching and learning new things with your great kids!

FHE Idea- Making Sense of Dollars and Cents

"We must not allow our yearnings to exceed our earnings."
-Pres. Thomas S. Monson, "Peace, Be Still," Ensign, Nov. 2002, 54.

These quotes and 9 great tips on earning, saving and managing money are from the January 2012 New Era article, "Making Sense of Dollars and Cents". It would be great to use for a discussion starter for Family Home Evening, for youth and older children.

FHE Idea -Easter

8th Ward Primary
This is a fun  idea the 8th Ward Primary did a few years ago that our family still enjoys. Maybe your family will too. Small visual aides along with scriptures are used to help tell the story of Easter.

You will need:

  •  1 egg carton

  • 12 plastic Easter eggs (the size that fits in the egg carton)

  • the small visuals listed below
Make a copy of the scripture references and items below on a small piece of paper and insert the paper and the small visual in each of the numbered plastic Easter eggs. For FHE take turns reading the Easter story starting with egg #1 and finishing with egg #12. The visual aides will make it fun and memorable.

  1.  Matthew 26:39 (sacrament cup)

  2. Matthew 26:14-15, thus fulfilled the prophecy in Zechariah 11:12-14 (3 dimes)

  3. Matthew 27:1-2 (knotted twine)

  4. Matthew 27:24-26 (small chunk of hand soap)

  5. Matthew 27:28-30 (square of red cloth and a thorn)

  6. Matthew 27L31-32, and he was crucified and nailed to a cross (tooth pick cross & tiny nail)

  7. Matthew 27:35-36 (small pair of dice)

  8. Matthew27:46, 48 (sponge)

  9. Matthew 27:57-60 (strip of white cloth)

  10. Matthew 27:60-66 (stone)

  11. Mark 16:1, Matthew 28:2, 5 (cloves, or a bay leaf)

  12. Matthew 28:6 (empty)

  • extra clothing
  • knives
  • matches
  • water

  • jumper cables
  • small shovel (folding)
  • tow chain
  • windshield scraper
  • paper and pen
  • bag of sand
  • Also check for proper tools to change a tire.

FHE- Emergency Contact Information

A great idea for Family Home Evening is to take a few minutes and go over important emergency contact information. Depending on the situation, emergency calls are handled in different ways. It is good to go over these situations and calling procedures with your family. Try role playing different situations and correct procedures for the following:

1.  Non-life Threatening Emergencies- (A neighbor or family contact) This is a good number to have in your cell phone, home phone or posted near a home phone. It can be used to get help when family members are home alone, or away from home and need help when parents or spouses are not available.

2.  Life Threatening Emergencies- (911) If someone is in a life-threatening situation or is unconscious call 911 immediately. When you call make sure to give them the following information:
  • Your name
  • Phone # you are calling from
  • Why you are calling- what has happened
  • Your exact location (include intersections, landmarks, etc.)
  • How many people have been injured and their conditions
  • What first aid help is being given
  • Do not hang up until the dispatcher tells you to
3. Natural Disasters-(ICE #, In Case of Emergency) This should be a number that all family members can program into their phone to call to account for everyone.
  • Use the abreviation -ICE as the contact # in your phone
  • Choose a family member or close friend who lives out of town preferably out of state.
  • In the event of a natural disaster such as an earthquake all members of the family need to call this number to check in an let the ICE person know they are OK. This is helpful when members of the family are at work school, etc. and may not be able to contact each other because of local breaks in communication.
  • Make sure to contact the family member or friend to make sure they are aware that they are your ICE contact.
  • In the event local communications are out make sure to write down and or memorize the ICE # before your phone battery goes dead.
Take time to program ICE #'s into your phones and go over the above procedures.

FHE Idea- Two Witnesses of Christ

A great Christmas Family Home Evening Idea.
It is a wonderful shadow box with figures that your family can make.
Take time to practice it and then enjoy the message of the birth of Jesus
as it took place in Jerusalem and on the American continent.
It could be used for FHE or made for FHE and used for a
Christmas Eve or Christmas day program.
Either way it will remind your family of the two great witnesses of the birth of our Savior.

Be Thankful Every Day

by Christi Jardine, Stake PL Leaders
Take time to feel and express gratitude for our many blessings. Here is an idea that I used with my achievement day girls a few years ago to help them show gratitude daily. We cut up the individual ideas and placed them in a jar. Then they could pull one out each day and do something to express gratitude. You could also just place the list on your fridge and try to do one each day until Thanksgiving!

I am thankful for my family!
-Play a game inside or outside together.
I am thankful for grandparents!
-Call and tell them you are grateful for them and love them.
I am thankful for my mom!
-Write her a note or a text, clean the kitchen, make dinner, do some laundry, clean up anywhere!
I am thankful for my Dad!
-Give him a big hug when he comes home, clean his closet, shine his shoes, etc.
I am thankful for my brothers and sisters!
-Do something nice for them: make their beds, read a book to, leave a nice note in their room..
I am thankful for prayer!
-Say a prayer today only saying, “ I thank thee for…”, don’t ask for anything.
I am thankful for friends!
-Send a text or an email to a friend to say thanks for being a great friend.
I am thankful for my teachers!
-Write a note to thank a primary, school or music teacher.
I am grateful for all my blessings!
-Share some of your blessings with others. Clean your room and donate clothes, toys, etc. to D.I.
I am thankful for our car!
-Clean out the car and then go get a treat!
I am thankful for the scriptures!
            -Memorize your favorite scripture.
I am thankful for neighbors!
-Do a secret service for your neighbors: rake leaves, pull weeds, shovel snow, etc.
I am thankful for my Heavenly Father!
-Say a prayer, write in your journal to express your love for him.
I am grateful for my cousins!
-Call, text, facebook, email or write a note to your favorite cousin!
I am grateful for a healthy body!
-Put on some music and dance, play ball outside, do some somersaults, etc.
I am thankful for good books!
-Go to the library and check out some thanksgiving books.
I am thankful for a prophet!
-Read or listen to a talk by the prophet on the internet or in a magazine.
I am thankful for my home!
-Clean out a closet or clean an area in your home while you listen to music!

FHE Idea- Nutrition

by Christi Jardine (Stake Provident Living Leader)

This is a great time of year to teach your family about nutrition! There are so many fruits and veggies ready to harvest. For Family Home Evening take time to review and teach your family about the importance of eating right by going to:

There are coloring pages, interactive activities, posters, etc. It is very well done and a great visual representation of healthy eating portions.

Here is a fun activity to try for FHE:

1- Review the info. on "My Plate".

2- Game:  Play a game with the food in your pantry and refrigerator. Take turns choosing a box, can, bag or fruit, etc. out of your pantry. Have members of your family tell which food group it goes in. Continue playing until family members identify the correct food with the correct food group illustrated on "My Plate".

3- Activity:  Give each person a paper plate. Use coloring crayons or markers to divide and color the plate into the food groups illustrated on "My Plate". For example: Proteins- purple, Fruits- red, Vegetables- green, Grains- gold, Milk- light blue. Then use magazine pictures, dry pasta, dry beans, etc. to glue on to the paper plate to represent each food group. Make sure to glue the food in the correct food group. (Pasta in the grains/gold section).
4- Family Outing: Visit a local "Farmers Market" or "Pick Your Own Fruits or Vegetables". Enjoy some of the delicious produce from our area. Take some home to eat. Maybe you could work together to dry, can, or freeze some for the winter. When children help they often will enjoy eating what they picked or picked out! Enjoy!

5- Refreshments: Have some sliced peaches or pears, fruit kabobs, cherry tomatoes, celery with peanut butter, carrots and dip, etc., etc. The possibilities are endless! Just make sure it is nutritious!

***This Family Home Evening can help your family members complete other things they are working on:

Primary Children: Faith in God, "Developing Talents," Activity which states:
"Learn about and practice good nutrition, good health, and good grooming, including modest dress."
Young Women:
Personal Progress, Knowlege Value Experience #2,

Young Men: BSA, Cooking Merit Badge
