FHE Idea - Ensign Peak

    In this great month of July when we commemorate the pioneers coming into the Salt Lake Valley, hiking Ensign Peak is a great Family Home Evening Activity or family day activity. The hike is short and fairly easy. There is one drop off area near the peak, so hang on to your little people.  At the top take time to look over the valley and read an historic account of Ensign Peak's significance.

Here is an account given by Elder Holland in the last General Conference:

"Before leaving Nauvoo in the winter of 1846, President Brigham Young had a dream in which he saw an angel standing on a cone-shaped hill somewhere in the West pointing to a valley below. When he entered the Salt Lake Valley some 18 months later, he saw just above the location where we are now gathered the same hillside prominence he had seen in vision.

As has often been told from this pulpit, Brother Brigham led a handful of leaders to the summit of that hill and proclaimed it Ensign Peak, a name filled with religious meaning for these modern Israelites. Twenty-five hundred years earlier the prophet Isaiah had declared that in the last days “the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains,” and there “he shall set up an ensign for the nations.” ¹

Seeing their moment in history as partial fulfillment of that prophecy, the Brethren wished to fly a banner of some kind to make the idea of “an ensign for the nations” literal. Elder Heber C. Kimball produced a yellow bandanna. Brother Brigham tied it to a walking stick carried by Elder Willard Richards and then planted the makeshift flag, declaring the valley of the Great Salt Lake and the mountains surrounding it as that prophesied place from which the word of the Lord would go forth in the latter days."

Salt Lake County Summer Reading Program

Enjoy the summer by reading some good books!

Head to the Holladay Library today and sign up for SL County Summer Reading Program. It runs from June-August. There are incentives and all kinds of free activities that encourage literacy and keep those reading skills sharp until school starts again in the fall. There is a Kids, Teens, and Adults programs! Stay at Home Spring Break

If money is tight or you just can't get away for Spring Break even though your family would love to, try a stay at home vacation. It is a great money saving idea and a lot of fun!

• Choose some fun field trips that your family has not done that are free or inexpensive and see our own Wasatch Front. Such as Temple Square' spring flowers, any Temple Square exhibit or movie, the new exhibits at the Church Museum, the scavenger hunt at the Family Hisstory Library, Kenecott Copper Mine, BYU's Carl Bloch Exhibit, BYU's Bean Museum, Hill Airforce Base Museum, Red Butte Gardens or any other fun activity that is available along the Wasatch Front.
• Another great idea that is relatively inexpensive is the Salt Lake Connects Pass. It can be purchased for 1-3 days for a relatively low price (much cheaper that going out of town and paying for hotels, meals and attractions). It includes 13 Wasatch Front attractions (Hogle Zoo, Discovery Gateway, This is the Place State Park and many more)  for one pass price. Most admissions to these parks and museums are $7-15 so the prices of the pass are great! It also includes a $10 lunch at the Lion House Pantry. If you are going out of state for Spring Break many cities also have some sort of city pass. Just Google the city name and city pass. Such as Dallas city pass. It is a great way to save a little money. That always makes your spring break less stressful and more enjoyable.
